HESS Members: This letter was received by the HESS President in December 2008, and is forwarded here. The funds requested are in support of visiting scholars and grad students using the Archives.

Dear Friend of Deborah Day,

As you may know, Deborah Day is retiring from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives. This note comes to you from Peter Brueggeman, the Scripps Library Director. I’ve had the pleasure of being Deborah’s supervisor since 1994 and working as her colleague in Scripps Library since 1984. Deborah has gifted me with a strong appreciation for the extensive archival collection she built here within Scripps Library. As Library Director, I’ve provided encouragement to her in managing a small unit, and built up resources and staffing for Scripps Archives, led our work to make Archives’ image and text resources available on the Web, and led a facility expansion funded by the University Librarian. So I’ve been closely involved with Scripps Archives for many years, but behind the scenes in a supporting role. So that’s who I am with respect to Deborah’s work in Scripps Archives to give context for this note.

Deborah worked towards establishing the Philip Rehbock Endowment of Scripps Archives, the income from which she used to support some expenses of visiting historians and graduate students using the Scripps Archives. Deborah and I have long agreed on this as the best usage for this endowment’s income. I know how meaningful continued research using Scripps Archives materials will be to Deborah, who so capably collected and curated these resources, and support for visiting scholars is an important component to see continuing use.

If you are interested in contributing funds to the Philip Rehbock Endowment in any amount to honor Deborah Day’s tenure and service as Scripps Archivist, your gift would be highly appreciated. Funds are added to the endowment base so all gifts in any amount are helpful.

Please make checks out to the “UCSD Foundation” with a note saying it is to be directed to the Rehbock fund (it’s essential that a donor designate where the money is to go in writing).  Please send your check  with a note directed its use as mentioned above, to the UCSD Libraries’ Development Director at the following address:

We will be compiling a list of donors for Deborah to see.

Thank you for your continuing interest in Scripps Archives,

 Peter
